Cinemagraphs

ANIMATION · ART DIRECTION
For the Montana Office of Tourism’s social media pages, we had a great number of amazing photographs that the social media influencers we worked with had captured, but we wanted to find a way to bring more magic into these still images. We decided to use cinemagraphs to do that.
Cinemagraph process
Normally cinemagraphs are created by taking video footage, and then freezing certain parts of the video to give the illusion of having a photograph with only one portion moving. Since we were working with still images rather than videos, we decided to work backwards and separate the image out into layers in photoshop so that we could bring them into after effects and add motion to specific layers that we wanted to animate. This ranged from something as subtle as adding smoke rising out of a cabin’s chimney to a dramatic flexing of a dinosaur skeleton’s shadow.
